The recently released MSN Messenger 7 build 0777 behaves differently to previous Messenger clients. Now, when you open a conversation window with one of your contacts, no session request is sent to the Switchboard, unless the client needs to retrieve the user’s Display Picture. Otherwise no connection is made. Not even typing notifications are sent to the other party.
Developers using the MSN Protocol should update their programs to behave accordingly to this change, as well as warn the users about this change, if their bots or other programs rely on this behaviour in any way.

The final version of the long anticipated MSN Messenger 7 is now available off Microsoft servers, although not officially released, it is scheduled for tomorrow! This build (0777) includes a few changes from 7.0.0732, such as smoothed thumbnails in the contact list, removed beta tags and a “Welcome to MSN Messenger” popup that informs you about the new features in the Microsoft client. Also, the gleaming icon (the little orange star that notifies you about your contact’s updated Space) has changed and looks much smoother now.
So, what are you waiting for? Download the final version (in English) from the official Microsoft link!

Switchboard servers keep track of how active their connections are, if a session is idle for an amount of time, it is automatically closed. This only applies to single-user conversation, though.
Some time ago, connections to the switchboard server could be idle for 5 minutes before the server automatically closed the session. This has changed recently, the switchboard now closes idle connections after 1 minute.
MessageCast, Inc. announced that its LiveMessage technology was deployed on MSN Video to give viewers real-time news, sports, and entertainment alerts whenever new items are posted on the web site.
LiveMessage is a broadcast application that can find people on popular real-time networks and deliver requested information via desktop alert, SMS, or email. The product is RSS compatible.
“It was painless to implement,” said Reed Price of MSN Video, “and we think that it will help drive return visits to MSN Video.” You can sign up for MSN Video Alerts at alerts.msn.com.
