There seems to be an awful lot of people having trouble with running Windows Live Messenger on Windows Vista. One problem I am hearing a lot about is Data Execution Prevention crashing Messenger, preventing it from fully starting up. The issue seems to come down to Acer’s eDataSecurity Management software.
If you have recently purchased an Acer notebook or desktop PC with Windows Vista installed, you can now download a patch from Acer to correct the problem.
Leave a comment on whether or not the patch fixes the problem for you - I’m interested to see if there is anyone else having this problem but from different causes.
Acer’s support site was down, so I couldn’t try the patch but I have found that uninstalling the acer esecurity management software works too.

it is acer’s fault…. not microsoft. but still thanks to this site for letting me know such fixing patch exist. I am cursing microsoft day and night before i knew it was acer’s problem.

Glah, I’m having a problem just downloading it! I know your not a tech support dude but when I called one they were completely useless and told me that they didn’t know MSN…
When I go to download MSN it says afterwards that I do not have permission! I’m the adminstrator and all parental controls are off, atleast I’m pretty sure they are. Does anyone else have this problem and anyone know if there’s a patch for it?

LOL I just love to see that I am not the only person in the world who has experienced these messenger problems. I discovered the ‘run as administrator’ trick a few days after i got the little acer beastie. But I am confused,if I download the patch (not from acer,I cant get onto that site), will I still have to ‘run as administrator’?.

My problem with WLM is that it crashes the whole laptop and it restarts. I just bought this DELL laptop with Vista on it. The crashing is pretty consistent. Yahoo messenger never crashes my computer. I tried uninstalling WLM and reinstalling it again.. same problem. I even tried an older version and it’s a little better (takes a bit longer before crashing) but still there. Any suggestions?

i just used the patch here and messenger works for me now.
I’ve bought an acer notebook (5610), i’ve used the patch, it worked for 2 days untill i closed my notebook… I booted the computer, and the whole keypad, touchpad, usb driver stopped working. I had to restore the whole computer. Acer changed everything in it but it still did the same thing!!!
Didn’t work for me with new Acer Aspire 5100 running Vista Home and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 However, installed the new Beta version of Live Messenger and that did work.

I’ve just got a new Acer Aspire 9300-5390 laptop. When I installed Windows Live Messenger, my Acer OrbiCam software wouldn’t work and I downloaded the drivers from Acer’s site and the software works now. However, my persisting problem even after restoring factory defaults on a brand new laptop is this: whenever I click on the “Advanced…” button under my webcam’s settings, Windows closes WLM on me. The DEP says it can’t be turned off for WLM. I’ve also come across the eDSMSN81patch file but I wouldn’t be here if it worked. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

i download the patch and it still doesn’t work. it tells me trouble shoot, and add more letters to my password. i need it working so my mom don’t hog my pc. I hate vista. It’s more like stressta.
i just bought a new accer notebook , and since then while using the video and audio chatting through both WLM and Yahoo messnger its a disaster , i keep hearing knocking all over the line and i cant hear anything clearly , i tried deleting versions and uploading new ones but nothing seems to be working … anyone can help me .

Ok, so I’ve tried the mirror, upgraded, un-installed, re-installed, patched, replaced and allowed .dlls and even made some changes in my registry. I’ve spent 4 days trying to fix this and have only managed to actually use MSN twice. Otherwise it just won’t respond, doesn’t give me any reason whatsoever, just doesn’t work. I’m running Vista Home premium on an Acer Aspire 5100. however, I recently cooked my HDD and had to send it to a repair shop, they swapped HDD’s and i’ve been having a few other problems since and have solved almost all of them, save for this one. Any ideas? I’m lost and this makes communicating with my family and friends ridiculously over-complicated any thoughts, ideas or speculation in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I have an Acer T180 Athlon. Although Acer eSecurity reported v2.5.3032 installed, hovering over the key icon showed a red line symbol, so I installed the patch anyway. Since installing, messenger works and now hovering over the key icon gives the message ‘Not yet initialised’. So I don’t know if it was a total success, but it has certainly freed up my system.

Hey, Ive downloaded the patch but when extrracting it says there is a unexpected problem and it closes, MSN still shuts down because of DEP.

had problem of messenger closing due to dep error , downloaded patch but no joy. someone told me to right click shortcut and run as adminstator and hey presto it works , its not perfect but it is a simple solution

okayy, so i am like super frustrated my msn on my acer comp would work for the longest time and now dep is closing it but i go the patch and when it opens it just stays up for like a quarter of a second and closes so i cant se anything and i need to no if there are any other ways to do this besides that link patch and changing to administrater ? please in need i miss my msn cause it worked last night and tadahh it just dosent any more so friggen frustrating

hey I downloaded the patch and it sign me on to messenger for about 10 seconds then stopped working again with the same problem..I even removed Acer Edata security and it work for a bit until I restarted my computer then it went back to being the same way…

Hey! I just read about your postings about the DEP and the acers security issues with msn messenger.. I was having the same problems, and just starting running vista (taking tylenol for the problem lol ) but I ran that security fix on here, and thanks a bunch,, now it works great!

Totally work, trust me, just give this a damn try it will cost u about 0.01 second
The solution is find the original messegre file
In my case its
c:/ Program files/ windows live/msnmsgr
Right click and run as administator
This should solve the problem,
If this doesnt work try disablling dep for that program and try again
