One of the focal points for Windows Live Messenger 8.1 is compatibility with Windows Vista, as there were many reported issues with running Windows Live Messenger 8.0 on Vista.
Having signed into Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0812 on Windows Vista just before, I was prompted with an optional update. Not expecting an update from 8.0 to 8.1 beta, I did some testing, and have come to the conclusion that the Windows Live Messenger team is confident version 8.1.0168 brings enough fixes to warrant an automatic update.
As a side note, the recent update to the Windows Live Messenger 8.1 beta has been made mandatory for those using the previous 106 build by the auto updater.
I have put up a small script in the sandbox which shows two alternate CVR commands sent to the messenger server, the only difference being the version of Windows (5.1 being XP, and 6.0 being Vista).

Neither worked for me, i’m on Vista and am finding this very stupid. I cant turn of DEP, because it says that messanger need it running. I cant run programe as administrator because its greyed out altho i am the administrator and the uninstalling flash doesnt work either…
As well as ‘Run As Administrator’ I found that if I enabled User Account control and did not allow it to start with Windows, I could log in form the Quick launch with no problem.
Soon as I switched User Control off again the error occurred!
I had trouble with messenger aswell but followed Daniels advance and works a treat now, using vista and definatly prefered xp!!! cheers daniel

Well–my Logitech QCPro 5000 (with latest Vista x64 software/drivers) loaded without any problems and I tried using Windows Live Messenger 8.1 (came with Vista x64) but ran into a problem. The logitech software recognized the camera and audio settings (during the WLM webcam setup) but when I went to connect with WLM–the in/output audio didn’t work. The video was picture perfect but I just couldn’t adjust the audio (speaker/mic) settings. I even disabled the Windows firewall but no luck. When I disconnected from the call and went back to use the WLM webcam setup–it recognized the audio/video settings of the camera. When I used audio only–WLM had no problems. It seems to be a problem just when I try to connect. Any ideas?

ah - forgot to mention that the error message I’ve got is (Error: 80048820) and when I do the Repair for connection, the only “!” I’ve got is on the Key Ports.
I use a proxy server, configured to run on Port: 8080, with a username/password. I used the proxy setting and the “Test” of this proxy under HTTP Proxy Settings under Advanced Settings under Connection. The test says:

I’ve done days of google search and solutions here and there and all not helpful, and I’ve seen ur other topic of the patch, and its not working here. What else solution? DNS Flushing? Playing with proxy settings from IE? Windows Firewall and adding the port I am using for proxy? Running messenger as administrator? Switch on/off User Account Control? Playing with Registry? Putting Socks’s setting as Proxy or completey remove any setting for the Socks port and even going silly and double check the Messenger’s username/password or using different account? God - All don’t work!!!
But I noticed you are differet and have brilliant experience, and I am willing that you could help me please.

Similar problem to Glenn’s above (Mar 20). My Creative WebCam Live Ultra and Logitech Headset (mic function) give good system checks in Windows, and opening WLM and performing the Video & Audio Setup gives good video/audio responses. However, when entering a Video call, the video is great, but audion is non-existent. My bar scale on the lower left of the monitor near my cam picture does not function. Using WLM 8.1 version, Windows Vista, dial-up.

Run as admin is greyed out, however you should have a button below that says “show settings for all users.” Click this and the same window will pop up with the run as admin choice NOT greyed out.

I have exactly the same problem. When I enter the audio setup, everything works fine, but, when in a call, there is no sound and all the volume sliders are disabled.
Here HEAR on the sound issue. I have a Altec Lansing headset and 8.1 does not register voice. It will RING through the headset but when the videocall starts the bars on the right are at 0 and can not be adjusted. This is obviously a Vista bug. Very annoying one too!
Listen to all the complaints about the sound not working in WLM on Vista I also have the same problem and had to run WLM on my XP machine. I am sure a fix is in the works with all these complaints. I also installed WLM on a HP Laptop with a built in cam running Vista with no problem. Same old problem DRIVERS

I eventually traced my audio problem back to the Audio drivers I downloaed (from Intel) for my intel board. When I went back to the Microsoft’s Standard HD Audio driver (on my Vista x64 OS), I got my audio control in WLM 8.1 back. I don’t know what OS you’re using, but I have to be careful not to be too eager to load drivers/software that are not Vista certified. It seems WLM 8.1 has problems with certain audio drivers.
Well, I haven’t been able to FIX my sound problem per se, but I did find a way to circumvent it a bit. I still can not use a video conference, but if I first CALL someone and then after connecting hit the webcam button I have video and working sound. You can’t go full screen with the picture, but it is better than it not working at all.

I have a new problem in WLM 8.1 with Vista Ultimate. When I listen to online radio for a while, my computer will show me blue screen and reboot again. Does anyone encounter this and do you have solution?
This really make me mad as I just bought the new computer and keeps on show me blue screen and it takes me long hours to figure it out is the WLM 8.1, yahoo messenger and skype are giving this problem because if I quit all the messenger, the online radio works fine without showing me the blue screen.

In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\.
Right click msnmsgr.exe, go to Properties.
On the Compatibility tab, tick the Run this program as an administrator check box and click OK.

Hi–Reading the posts here, I’m wondering if some of these issues are not Vista related, but flaws in the basic Messenger software. I’m using the vx6000 microsoft lifecam with xp pro; I get picture and sound from person I’m calling, and they (sometimes) get my picture–but sound comes through as just noise.
When I go to Messenger/Adjust Audio Video, it recognizes my speakers, but when I go to next screen to adjust microphone level, the slider refuses to stay put–you put it up and it sliiiiides down. Cannot get VU meter (green/yellow/red bars) to respond.
Guessing this is where the audio connection problem is coming from , but don’t have a clue as to how to fix it. Help would be much appreciated.
So I would say; about six years of development “suck OS” by Microsoft’s engineers cause rather more problems for users then it was expected. None of my camera is supported, camcorders either. Live Messenger is not responding. Movie makers freezing whole system. Orbicam is not responding. But visually looks great. Do you think that AERO future will be catchy?……..Not for me I am going to be Fedora user….Goodbye Microsoft and keep up good work……..
P.S. My laptop is Vista capable but I am not anymore………

About the sound issues with MSN Messenger:
Click on the audio icon by the clock, there’s a mixer,
and then you will see a set of sound options for different
applications; including MSN Messenger. Modify it appropriately
and it starts working fine.

I had been having the same problem with WLM. I could make video conference calls but i could only see and hear the people i was talking to. They could not hear me at all. It was actually an overlooked mistake. On the video and soud set’up wizard i noticed that i could scroll down and choose from various microphones. I choose the one that worked.
My web cam doesn’t work on msn 8.1 …it just freezes and closes everything i try to turn it on..can ANNNYONE help.. pllllease
None of these methods worked for me either. I’ve also been getting error messages and when I sign in it tells me either that my status could not be changed(when I try to go from apear offline to online) or it says a problem has occured… then it signs me out and says that connection has been lost… it actually dose mess up my internet connection for about 30 seconds.

I am having the same problem as 1,000’s of othrs. My webcam does NOT work with msn 8.1 and Vista.
Why has Microsoft not addressed this issue, it obviously is an MS issue!

For everyone with the problem where a live call doesn’t pick up any audio from the mic, downloading Windows Live Messenger Beta (8.5) fixed the problem for me. Hope it helps others.
I just bought a new Logitech Quickcam Chat which I was told will run with Vista. I installed the software and hooked everything up and it allowed me to do all the things necessary to get started but when I went to use it with Windows Live Messenger I got a message saying, “We are unable to run audio and video setup”. Does this have something to do with Vista, is the webcam not compatible with it?

I am running Windows Xp with SP2. Whenever someone tries to initiate a webcam or view my cam. Or vice versa, MSN is closed by windows saying it is unable to run the program.
Anyone know how to stop this from happening?

Curiosity, my daughter is having great difficulties with windows live messenger, on her new laptop with Vista, I will be trying all the above things tomorrow. But in the mean time she had a lot of trouble with her camera so she uninstalled windows live messenger and also installed Java and camera works fine now, so maybe it will work for someone else!
But windows live messenger is still shutting down way to much this I find unreal! So I will take all your great advice and try and get hers to work.

been having a problem with vista/live messenger since got my acer laptop. after clean install installed live messenger works fine then after windows update it hangs in the background hogging resources and slowing shutdown. after many diff fixes it works if i disable my BISONCAM inbuilt camera. havnt tried other drivers yet not need camera so much. result 4 me

as far as i can see you are doing a great job here and you might have a solution for me as well.
I m using vista and running MSNlive8.1 and whenever i want to open a chat the MSN disconnects and connects again by its self …some times in 45 secs some in 25 even in 5 secs!
Its not happening with a specific contact everytime…and its not happening everytime that i connect…seems that is more stable when i right click on a contact and choose the option open a chat or something like this!
PLEASE any suggestions…its very annoying being kicked off every now and then(more than 10 major times per day more than 10 times its major time)

Ok so i just built my computer q6600 3.8ghz quad ,1gb 2900xt Gpu , 2gb of ddr3 ram this thing is a power house vista 64bit is great… aside from one problem i get into msn messanger i try to video chat i get to the settings part do the mic and speaker when i click next for web cam it just locks up no response and i know damn well its not using up enough of my resources to cause a lock up , (not an amature either) so running and installing this thing as admin doesnt help… web cam im using is the xbox360 webcam so the only conclusion i can come to is it doesnt see that but it doesnt explain the locking up? is it the program or the os with the problem i might switch to ubuntu and go back and enjoy a working os

I had same problem on my Xp sp1 when had msn 7.5 and when wanted sig up told me need to upgrade. unfortunately sent me to http://www.get/live.com/messenger setup file is 18 Mbs and same problem as you people, i could be seen and heard but i couldnt see other.
just yesterday i found original same version windows live messenger (setup file 16 Mbs) on microsoft site and surprisingly that version 8.1.0178 WORKING!

I have vista home premium on a HP DV9520 with webcam and get the same problem. They can hear me and see me but I cannot hear them I cannot move the volume button on the sound on their cam but can move my mic sound up and down. Am about to try 8.5 beta to see if it fix’s the problem and will post back.

I’m using vista, because I’m staying in one of my university’s residential college, the line has to go through some proxy thing that I dont understand. I can use internet perfectly but failed to use Msn Messenger. Whenever I try to connect, it comes up with an error code which leads to a bunch of solutions that don’t work, and it says my proxy and firewall settings aren’t right, when I’ve checked million of times, they are the right ones! downgrade your msn to 7.5 then go to the main page and go to tools>audio and video setup then the webcam should work

used to have the same problem but surfing the net helped, when you are setting up audio and video on WLM make sure you uncheck the box that says if you are using headphones that should do it

The solution is to edit your profile information by changing it to a country that receives ads- US,UK,Canada
It doesnt work because other countries do not have sucj an ad relationship with Microsoft. So find a compatible address, Zip Code and all.. and you’ll be good

Hi Daniel, I heve a problem I have a Toshiba Satellite with integrated web can.,is a chiconi USB 2.0, well with Skipe works perfect, but when I installed windows live messenger the cam stop working, I restore my computer to the time when I installed the messenger to get my web cam working again, can you help me.

In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\.
Right click msnmsgr.exe, go to Properties.
On the Compatibility tab, tick the Run this program as an administrator check box and click OK.

I agree with all the vista problems.. we pay good money for a lap top with built in cam so we dont have to deal with BS but what does vista and a laptop equal? nothing working right!! will continue to hunt for a fix to get cam to work on msn messenger, we too get the error that they are looking for a fix and will notify us when they FIND one Pfffttt what ever. just another crappy mircosoft product destined for the garbage and got rushed being made without putting in too much thought, kinda like the xbox 360!!! lol have gone thru 8 thats right 8 of those suckers sending them back to be fixed. Maybe we should go for a mac?

Hi, can somebody help me with my msn. I’m currently using Windows Vista business and windows live messenger 8.1. Everytime i used video call it my msn will hang. I dont know what happen but previously it work fine in my lappy. I’m using build in camera from SOny.
For past 3 week every two days i got to reinstall and uninstall again the msn. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it doesnt work. Please help me with this problem. Kinda sick with msn now.
i’ve had most of those problems in the past, i have Vista and couldn’t use the live messenger so what i used to fix it then was to download an older version and it worked fine until yesterday. now i have a new problem, it has to be upgraded so when i clicked to upgrade it sayes that it cant for some reason, so i tryed to download it and it got to 99% and then stopped, i have tryed several times now and it is extreamly frustrating because i have dial-up so all of that took a long time (my comp is only downloading at 2.28 KB/s) so if anyone has a solution for me it would be grately appreciated.

I am having the same problem with vista basic, getting a WLM error of service temporarily unavailable….even though it really is when i use my friend’s computer.
BUT when i first installed it, it was fine. Then i was having other troubles, so i did something i guess i shouldnt have and a few programmes had problems, i successfully fixed all the others, but no many how many times i get rid of everything WLM, and reinstall, it always comes up with the same problem. Any ideas?
my OS is japanese, i am not…so there are half my problems for finding a fix on my own…

kika, you can’t run “audio and video setup” while you’re on a call if that’s what you’re trying to do, I believe you have to be signed out.
HP M9340F running Vista, I can see people, they can see me, they can hear me but I can’t hear them and volume controls do weird things. They can hear me on phone calls but I can’t hear them. Any fixes yet?
hi.. ive been reading and you obviously know about this.. i need your hel i have an a new hp, i have Vista and WLM.. it works fine, my webcam and the mic but after the first couple of time sit has started giving me problems, and everyt time i attempt to make a video call it just becomes non resposive and stays like that until i turn off the comp. regardlesss of me trying to end the task. OK, my problem is that everything seems to be working fine. I can chat and email, but when I go to start a video call, it says it’s loading, but then hangs up. Both parties experience the same thing.

Hi, i recently got a new laptop with vista. I have problems getting onto anything related to microsoft. For example hotmail.com. I can get onto the home page of xbox.com but if i try to sign in the page does not load. When trying to sign into msn i get an error with the key ports.Can you please help me? I think it may have something to do with me and the .NET messenger service as i can not connect no matter what i try. Thanks.
Well i just got an HP pavilion a week ago…im running vista ultimate 64bit. I’ve installed windowns messenger and my pc gives the blue screen every 10 or 20 min. When im running WLM stops responding and even if i try to end the process with task bar…it wont close, and when i try restarting it keeps the pc from logging off. Also when im running WLM and i try using my webcam…it does fine…ultill that blue screen appears!!!

I recently got a laptop with vista, I have been trying to use Windows Live Messenger from since the time I got it. I downloaded the latest version of Msn Messenger and for some reason when its being installed, it only reaches to 99%.I have tried downloading older versions as well…but I’m prompted to upate to the newest version cus the older versions will not work.
Has anyone else been having the same problem? and have you found a way to fix it? I would really appreciate any help I could get

I’m wondering how can I stop my chat Window from automatically opening when I click on other applications in the taskbar.
For instants I’m have a conversation and the Chat Window is minimize along with say word and or IE, but if I open Word or IE, then the Chat Window opens behind of that programme and when I minimize again it’s there.
I would not mind if I was not sharing a computer, so I step away and someone uses IE then closes or minimizes they can read my messages.
