The curse of chain instant messages

A site I have been reading for a while now is Messenger Stuff, another Windows Live Messenger related community and blog. One thing I like about their blog posts is there are quite a few opinion posts, and not just all repeated news.

absorbation writes about chain messages over Windows Live Messenger, those messages that instruct you to send it on to 50 people in 7 seconds or else your dog will die:

I get a message, from someone I have not spoke to in months saying:

“if you love your MUM then send this to TEN people unless your mum will hav an ACC DENT Tonight OR Tomorrow send bac”

How did I reply? Like every geek does, by complaining about the reasoning behind sending one. And the reply I got was on the lines of: I agree, but my mom could die.

I agree with the post entirely, some chain e-mail messages justify their existence occasionally by being funny or cute, but chain messages over instant messaging are pointless and stupid.

If you get a chain IM, perhaps think about whether or not it is worthwhile sending on. Is it blatantly a load of lies? Ignore it! It’s just going to annoy more and more people.

i totally agree they are so pathetic i had one saying something like send this to 10 people in the next 3o seconds or someone will be at the bottom of your bed tonight with a knife and people actually for this. Lmao

Heh, yes, I agree. I used to actually follow through with the stupid IMs (ugh, imagine that) but now I just don’t anymore. Everyone /knows/ that a ghost won’t come and scare the daylights out of you if you don’t send it…but I think it’s the way it’s phrased that people just think, “better do it - just in case.” The sad thing is, this is now extending far beyond email and IM now. It’s even on deviantART comments, signatures, the works. I wouldn’t be surprised to have people put one of these stupid messages as a blog post saying, “put this on your blog in the next fifteen minutes, or else you will die tomorrow!” (But of course, with really crappy spelling and grammar.)

I honestly disagree you see the chain messages are just fun little things people like me do to get a kick out of stuff most people are feeling bad one day and then the next they get one of them crazy messages and they dien laughing…so just look at it that way…nobody said you had to believe it.
