Many users are currently experiencing trouble signing into Messenger getting error 8100031. Mario posted in the current forum topic on the issue with some instructions on how to temporarily get around it.
Add the following to entries to your hosts file:
65.54.239.80 messenger.hotmail.com
65.54.239.80 dp.msnmessenger.akadns.net
As he states, it’s a fairly dirty fix. Be sure to remove the two entries once the problem has been resolved on the server end. This post will be updated when that happens.
Update: Looks like it is now fixed for most users, make sure to revert any changes you made to your hosts file.

Thanks for this!
It worked for me!

where is the hosts file?=/
um thats all well and done but i dont even know where the hosts file is. so please how does one find this seemingly non existant file?
Follow the two links, it is explained in further detail.
h8hhh
i followed the links, these two folders do not exist for me either.
added solution to my host file but it is still not signing on - it is getting very frustrating - i keep getting the same error
i’m still also getting the same error, but not with other accounts. appearently this is account specific, and i’ve tried most things i’ve found on the web, and i still cant sign on the oldest version of windows messenger or the web messenger?
October 19th.
I am experiencing this problem now, but only with one of my accounts.
My old hotmail account still works fine, but my primary Live ID account (*something*@gmail.com) can no longer sign in to Windows Live Messenger or MSN Webmessenger. I have however no problems signing into passport.net, live.com, spaces.live.com etc. with this account, so it seems to be messenger specific.
i have tried the hosts file workaround to no avail.
getting fairly frustrated here..
kind regards

Exactly the same with me, and the above solution doesn’t work…
Is there another way to get it working? I use my normal account pretty much all the time, and haven’t added many people to my second account…
Please help
Same here. Suddenly my primary live account wont sign in to messenger live nor web messenger. Tried installing Gaim and Trillian as well, with the result of Gaim crashing and Trillian just not working. Have tried signing in using three different computers with no luck. Tried logging in with a new account and that worked. Really strange and really frustrating.
im getting the error for msn but ONLY on my email, i can sign into any other msn email on the messanger, the problem seems to be only on my email address ..please help
i am still facing 81000314 error. pl solve it

Johannes, there was a reported outage of the Messenger service around the time you posted - so it should be working now.
Im getting this problem too now, what is up with that?
And only my account, others are working fine.
I didnt actually find a solution on this site, the “dirty” fix didnt work for me either.
The msn servers seems to be working fine too
Anyone?
ya my msn is not working write either so somthings up !
i am not getting through
I put that lines at the end of the document and I still have the same problem.
I have had sign in problems for some 2 weeks and solved the error code coming up by switching the connection type to my broadband provider from PPPoA to PPPoE. I think checking with your provider the type of service connection to use. Characteristics were also the inability to access certain sites like hotmail and other msn services.
