My article about solving error 80048820 has ranked highly in search engines right from the week I posted it, as a result a lot of people have been referring to it and commenting on it. A few of the comments are people reporting they found another way to solve it, the big one is changing a setting in their router settings.
The first one is posted by S t r e t c H, he gives the steps involved in changing the MTU (maximum transmission unit) size in his NETGEAR wireless router to a value of 1400. This setting can be found in most routers (I think?), usually under WAN settings.
Shane also reports doing the same thing on his DLINK wireless router fixed this problem. Same with he next commenter, Robyn.
So, if you have been constantly getting this error for a while and you know how to change this setting on your setup, give it a try and see if it works. I would like to get some feedback on whether it works or not for those who do try, so I can post some more specific instructions for others.
got a linksys router. thanks for your tips. after changing my router MTU from “auto” to 1400, it works well!
everything is solved thanx to the registry some of you posted..
windows update works as well now
thanx for everything!
hello everyone, i’ve mad a registry file (Only Works On Windows!)
just to fix this particular problem, it involves Windows Update and the MSN Login problem..
just go to this link, download the mtu.reg file and voila!
http://members.lycos.nl/mahsalti/all
mtu.reg file is in it
good luck!
I forgot to mention that you need to restart afterwards..
Yes!!!
it does work fine.
but it\’s good only for whom his connection protocol is PPTP.
and you should tune the MTU to 1436.
MTU Size
The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 Bytes, 1492 Bytes for PPPoE connections, or 1436 for PPTP connections. For some ISPs you may need to reduce the MTU. But this is rarely required, and should not be done unless you are sure it is necessary for your ISP connection.
Asaf
You are a genius. This solved my problem.
Thanks
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Changing the MTU to 1400 worked!
Thank you so much, it worked right away, thanks so much.
Cheers, it worked great!
Thanks… have same problem here in Puerto Rico with a 2Wire Router, I change the MTU value to 1400 and its working fine. The strange thing is that I have 3 computers 1 runing XP Pro other with Mac OS Xand a laptop with Windows Vista and the laptop never failed to open any page or msn. Thank You.
READ THIS!!! I would be willing to bet Athlon 3800 X2 that the reason you are all having difficulty is because we in NZ at least are using PPoE internet sevice. PPoE cannnot send packets bigger than 1492 Kb Therefore if you MTU or your MRU is anything bigger than 1492 you will not be able to connect properley. Go into the settings on your respective modems and change MTU to 1492 and your problems should go away. If not then I can’t help you…
Thanks.
I have a Belkin ADSL2 Modum Wireless G Plus MIMO Router (Model # F5D9630-4) and changing MTU to 1492, the msn works again!
Thx
I also changed the MTU on my Belkin Wireless Router (54g) from 1432 to 1492 and it worked.
Thanks to the people that suggested this – I love you.
I have a belkin router but have no idea to change the mtu or anything can someone please help?
Changed to 1400 & works….
BUT YOU MUST REBOOT! Make sure you fully restart your pc!
DONE!
I’m on talktalk with a wireless router, the MSS is set to 1400 at default and I’m not sure what the MTU was set at as it just said “default”. I changed the MTU to 1440 and now it’s working fine. Didn’t have to reboot at all it worked straight away.
Thanks dudes!!!!!
Georgia, to get to the settings you have to log into the router. You have to type it’s IP adress into the address bar, then it’ll ask you for a username and password, which is usually admin and admin. Then find the WAN settings and you should find MTU on there.
You’ll probably have to check your manual to find out the IP, username and password settings.
Thanks a million to those who tell the magic number “1400″.
I was having trouble with my DLINK 524 router with my XP. Website not loaded consistantly, MSN 7.5 or above cannot login… (funny though 7.0 with XP/2000 worked).
No one from Microsoft / DLINK can helped for more than 1 month.
I tried MTU=1492 down to 1452… and only yesterday I found this site with a lot of successful feedback using the magic number “1400″.
Tried and success last night, smooth as silk with all 3 of my computers (2-XP, 1-2000) with MSN 8.1. Now I can sleep.
I had problems logging in MSN Messenger using Belkin Wireless G Mimo Modem Router. I changed MTU from 1432 to 1492 and it worked!!

I have tried the workaround. Firstly i set the MTU to 1400 at the modem and yet it did not work. Anyhow, after doing the same to the wireless router, i’m gonna it’s perfect!! Finally my msn became alive!!!! Thanks for generous sharing!!! Love you~~ lol

Thank You, the 1400 MTU just worked fine.I would have never guessed that.
I have some problems with Kerio Firewall 6.xxx.
I’m using a computer as Server and with it i’m connecting to internet throught PPPoE.
I’m sharing internet for my Local Internet (10 PCs).
In these PCs MSN Messenger does not work.
Someone has told me to change the MTU.
But I don’t know where to find MTU and for which LAN to change.
omg this worked… woot.. i was getting so so pissy.. thanks!
I’m currently using AOL 9.0 VR and a Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G-Router. I’ve tried changing the MTU to 1400 and had no luck – just tried Symphony’s suggestion of 1492 and I’m still unable to connect.
My computer was brand new 7 days ago and msn worked perfectly fine for the first few days, but then decided to stop. Belkin tech support are no use either.
Found my MTU was set to 0 (default) and tried setting it to 1400. Router wouldn’t allow it though as it needs to be TCP MMS + 40 (and as TCP MMS was set to 1400…)
So I set the MTU to 1445 and it works.
Thanks!
Hey thank’s I changed the MTU to 1400 I had it in 1500. My router is a Netgear.
I have a lap top and a PC. My Laptop was connecting ok, but my pc showed me these erros : 80048820 and extended error code 80048439. After changing to 1400 it connected instantly.
Guy thank you very much.
Works like a charm!
Thanks
I’ve tried everything everyone on here has said.. and yet when I try to sign into msn, it still says there is a problem with the Key Ports, I’ve even gone to the extreme of deleting all the programs off the computer, and then re-installing them after I tried signing in without anything on. This is ridiculous. Plus the fact, It’s school holidays, and windows live messenger is the only way I can talk to my buddies!
Please help!
A-Mazing! thanks..
hello, please could someone help me change my mtu, im using a scientific atlanta 2100 router, i dont know how to change the mtu to 1400, im having trouble acessing windows updates and live messenger,i keep getting 2 error codes when trying to sign in or update
error code: 80048820
extended error code: 80048439
i have tried to change the time and date, but to no effect… many thanks for your assistance with my problem…lee
OK windows live messenger was working just fine until i installed the update for internet explorer (internet explorer 8). it suddenly stopped working. i tried everything, from proxy to time zone etc…….to no avail…
then i decided to uninstall the update and surprise !!!! it worked again…..
so i think u should try to keep older versions of internet explorer and do not update ur browser at the moment…..u can use an alternative browser like opera or mozilla and keep the same old version of internet explorer.
Thank you!! I have a kozumi router and it solve the issue by changing to 1400
