My article about solving error 80048820 has ranked highly in search engines right from the week I posted it, as a result a lot of people have been referring to it and commenting on it. A few of the comments are people reporting they found another way to solve it, the big one is changing a setting in their router settings.
The first one is posted by S t r e t c H, he gives the steps involved in changing the MTU (maximum transmission unit) size in his NETGEAR wireless router to a value of 1400. This setting can be found in most routers (I think?), usually under WAN settings.
Shane also reports doing the same thing on his DLINK wireless router fixed this problem. Same with he next commenter, Robyn.
So, if you have been constantly getting this error for a while and you know how to change this setting on your setup, give it a try and see if it works. I would like to get some feedback on whether it works or not for those who do try, so I can post some more specific instructions for others.
I have a D-link router and the MTU was set to 1500 and msn worked for a while, then suddenly stopped. I changed it to 1400 and so far, so good!

nothing… tried all out.. using a netgear router, set the mtu internet options and made repair at network issues.. checked all and it said all ok… but still this damn error… what shud i do… im using sygate firewall…

and you should tune the MTU to 1436.
MTU Size
The normal MTU (Maximum Transmit Unit) value for most Ethernet networks is 1500 Bytes, 1492 Bytes for PPPoE connections, or 1436 for PPTP connections. For some ISPs you may need to reduce the MTU. But this is rarely required, and should not be done unless you are sure it is necessary for your ISP connection.

Using a Netgear (model rp614) router
I got this 80048820 error when I installed a new Belkin router.
I changed the PPPoE setting to PPPoA and it suddenly started working again.
This may help someone with the same Belkin-induced headache.

yeah — Windows live Messenger and hotmail are now working after simple unclicking hte synchornize time under the intert time tab in the clock section. I had done everything else listed in the article except change the MNU size — and only ’cause I couldn’t figure out how to do this! So start with this change easy easy change first!

Was set to automatic, on my linksys WAG54G but changed it to 1400 and so far so good.
I had the same problem with my Linksys WAG54GS but the other way round. I was told by a friend of mine that for BT broadband the mtu should be set to 1400, so I changed it from 1500 to 1400. Then my windows live messenger gave me the error messages 80048820 and 80048439. So I set it back to 1500 now it works fine again.

I got 80048820 error solved.
1. I try “In the Open box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK†===> still got 80048820 error
2. Tick “Automatically detect setting†===> still got 80048820 error
3. Setting wireless router MTU 1500 to 1400 ===> still got 80048820 error
4. Clear Cookies, cache, history ===> still got 80048820 error
5. login hotmail account, click sigin on offline tab ===> still got 80048820 error
6. today is 13 SEP 2006
Check the system date— found that I have 13 JULY 2006 — wrong date !!!!!!!!
Set the right date 13 SEP 2006 got 80048820 error
9. REPEAT 6, 7, 8 ===>3 cycles => confirm the results has same patterns.
10. reboot the computer.
11. start step 6, 7, and 8 again ===>4 cycles==> confirm the “similar†results.
EXCEPT THE ERROR MASSAGE NOW CHANGE TO 80072ee7.
CONCLUSION= for my computer
HP Pavilion Centrino Duo - T2050 - 2 weeks old
with XP service pack 2 OEM
WITH MSN 7.5 new installed did not work from the beginning.
Start with unsuccesful login, got errors with differents codes then finally end up with 80048820
Try all options suggested on the net, and fails then
THEN ONCE the system date was correct, every work fine, succesfully log in.
With sciencetific proof, repeated wrong date setting and right date settings,
“WRONG SYSTEM DATE†is the main cause of 80048820 on my notebook.
After reboot => now only get 80072ee7 error code with the same experiment.
So those who got 80072ee7 should try “CORRECT SYSTEM DATE†setting as well.

My MSN ver 4.7 is not working with wrong date over 2 months but with out error numaric code.
Just normal retry error.
The date correction fixed my problems.
I thinks 80048820 is general error codes for a number of wrong environments for MSN.
Which is a very bad debug error code system.
That is why many people got diffent procedures to succesfully fix their environments for MSN.
And we should conclude that you cannot have one solution for this error code, nor other error codes.
I think MSN got to have better programing code or better algorithm for error codes.
I hope microsoft will fix it or we all should change to yahoo or other massenger software.

I changed the MTU on my router down to 1400 (it was at 1500), and msn logged in.
What bugs me is that it worked before, and I had never touched my MTU setting. I want to know why it suddenly decided not to work.

I tried everything I could on the web to no avail. But then I tried changing the MTU on my own PC instead of on the wireless router. I’m using a WRT54GC.
I used Regedit and got to the key:

And looked for the interface matching my Wireless adapter. (I recognized the IP in the string). I created a new DWORD value called “MTU” and put 1472 as the Decimal value.
Restarted my PC, and VOILA! IT WORKED!! I can now go on MSN, Hotmail, I can windows update,… everything!
Ive discovered that since my linksys BEFDSR41W router is a slightly older version that it does not have the MTU setting on it! Thereore i need to upgrade the firmware, the problem is that i cant find where to download it from since on the linksys website there are no firware downloads for my router. Can i download the (.Bin) file from anywhere else??? Plz help!

This error has been driving me up the wall, and when I saw things about changing MTU, I was sceptical that it would work for me because this is the only computer on my Linksys network that comes up with this error code…. but when I saw your idea about checking the system date, I found out it had reverted back to 2002 and when I put in the correct date: it worked!

Haha i descoved this after replacing my cmos battery, lucky i clicked on to what would of caused it to stop under both my operating systems. I came to put the word out, as i knew if i tripped on it others would too… and thats how i found your great advice

Call your ISP and ask them for MTU number – they will provide it to you.
MTU number is ISP specific – not router specific.

I had the problem after updating my D-link DSL-G624T router firmware to V3.00B01T02.UK-A.20060621 on one of two computers in my network. One of the computers didn’t have the MTU setting mentioned above. Adding these settings got hotmail and MSN working and my girlfriend happy. Thanks!

I have a belkin wireless adsl router and using talktalk could not connect to MSN Messenger nor MIcrosoft Update. Changing the MTU to 1400 from the default 1454 has fixed my problem. Thanks for the tip.

I have a BELKIN 54g. In order to change the MTU, go to “connection type” under the WAN heading, then click on PPPoE, then click “next”. The next page will give you an option to put your username and password for your DSL provider in and change the MTU, however on my particular Belkin, the minimum setting is 1454 so that negates being able to change it to 1400.
Some more feedback…when I did this change, my computer was no longer able to connect to the internet so I ended up changing it back to dynamic anyway so it was of no help.

I’ve been having this problem for several days now, and right after changing the MTU in my Edimax wireless router - I was reconnected to the service.
Tried everything, fixed the registry, re-installed messenger, even restored my system from an image, but it didn’t work. I would have never guessed the MTU alone - thanks, I’ll post a link at my website to this page.

Changing the max trans units to a lower value is just slowing your conection down. defualt for windows is around 1472ish leaving 28ish for the packet header(a signiture or fingerprint of sorts). 1500 is max over tcp/ip. Those are bytes not bits. 8 bits to a byte. so shortening a packet to 1400 is 100 x 8 x however many packets transfer in a second, slower. As far as speed goes. you can acually get even worse when you think about how the receiving server/computer may be set to read at windows default and have to wait for the next packet to add on the other 72ish bits before handling it, then the next packet is 72ish x 2 short and has to wait for the next packet - and so on… (all this happens in milliseconds of course, but you see a slower connection) Leave your routers set to 1500. Just as important, if not more important, never increase MTU’s beyond 1500. tcp/ip won’t allow it. and packets will be broken before sending in reverse of the last example. Result = slow speeds again. A different fix is needed. A future release will resolve this issue. Trust me. -microsoft global IT

Thanks for that Matman, I have a Belkin 54G, was on OneTel moved to TalkTalk and email with attachments was not completing on send ( but the recipients got them), left it in my outbox and tried to resend later. Changed MTU to 1400 from 1454 default, and download speed was slower, but hotmail and eBay.co.uk logged in much faster (eBay.com was never an issue…????)
Reset it to 1458 (max for BT apparently) and email attachments sends first time now. Ebay signing in uses SSL, which apparently might be an issue for TalkTalk users…there is something on their support pages

I’m with talk talk and I was having the same error message on my belkin router but no problems when I used a USB modem. I tried absoulty everything including getting my router exchanged, but to no avail until I changed the MTU setting from 1454 to 1400. Everything works perfectly now. im on my belkin54 wireless router, put in http://192.168.2.1/ click on enter and ignore the request for a password, on the left hand side click wan settings, alter the mtu from 1454 to 1400 and my msn and hotmail are now working ok. apply settings and save. good luck

i have a belkin g 125 router using the wireless feature through my laptop (hp dv6108tx) i have changed mtu, date and time, dll registry, and everything else i still can’t sign into windows live messenger, hotmail or anything with windows in the web address. i live in thailand if that makes a difference.

I changed the MTU default setting from 1432 to the maximum 1492 and it worked. The 1400 did not work for me, and the reason why it did not work for everybody depends on the Type and model # of the router you own. It is good practice to state that in your reply.

Just wanna say that I had this problem for about 2 weeks now and it all started when my batteries on my computer went bad, the date and time went back to 2003 and something, I didn’t change it until now when i read this post

It seems weird that the MTU adjustment fixes the problem for a lot of you. I mean if your network packets exceed the value associated with the MTU, the router will proceed to fragment them and reassemble them at the destination.
The logical answer and resolution for me was the date\time being skewed and that was the first thing i looked at when confronted with this problem. Alot of authentication services are extremely dependent on this - take Active Directory for example.
Has anyone found any more information on this?

I found the cure for my problem lay within the router itself, it was the date and time in the router setup that was causing the problem

Just replaced my ADSL modem with a Netgear DG824M. I managed to get everything working as I wanted (despite not really knowing what I was doing and avoiding the manual as one does). Then I came across this article, changed the router MTU from 1492 (the default) to 1400 as directed and everything began working. Yet another example of my opinion that computers are designed for software engineers (I’m a senior software engineer) and not their parents.

in my situation, i am using Asus WL-530, pre-configure it to dial PPPoE, and activate the wireless..
able to surf net, but MSN can’t login with that 80xxx error. .
solution for me:
1.
just disable the sygate firewall software
then MSN messenger logins fine ..
2.
just make it a bridge AP, and manual dial PPPoE on Windows XP, then sygate works with MSN messenger
questions:
any one knows what’s the conflict ? and how to configure sygate to make it workable with wireless AP PPPoE preconfigured?

i’ve done everything possible, and everything you guys have said, i have the Lynksis SRX200 and i’ve changed the MTU and everything and i’ve done everything that the normal check says to do and still it doesn’t work, does anybody have any suggestions!

MTU Regkey worked for me!!
I have a linksys wag200g and was told to upgrade my Linsys FIRMWARE for my router.
Changed my MTU from 1500 to 1400 and it worked a treat!!

I tryed 1400 but didn’t work. Then tried 1500 for MTU and it WORKS!!!! I tryed everything else before .dll’s, clock, etc. but it worked with 1500, not 1400. My Router is a Trust model.

It helps me. I changed the MTU to 1400 and that resolves the problem.
I FOUND A SOLUTION….
Go to internet explorer!
-Tools
-Advanced
-and uncheck SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0
- Click apply
-then try login again to msn messenger.
After you log in, you can go back to your internet explorer setting and enable SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 and everything carries on working fine.
This worked me, hope it works for you.
I have the netgear dg834 (lr osmething like that) wireless adsl router, and i just added a VPN exception to my firewall settings ( i think it was VPN the second one below ANY on the drop down box) and my msn now works.

I use wireless edimax router, and had the same problem for such a long time (2-3 weeks). I reinstalled my whole system yesterday, and only today found this solution in this forum - changing the MTU to 1400, and it worked like a magic!

lol! oh man - I had this error after installing a new mobo today… the date was set to january 2004 (didn’t notice), thanks to the guy who suggested changing the date lol!!
For anyone with a Belkin router……………
Go to “connection type” and change it to PPPOA then click “next” and you will see MTU but LEAVE IT and save save your settings with the PPPOA connection and it should work.
If not go back to connection type so you can see MTU and change it from 1432 to 1400.

i have a netgear router and i spent weeks trying every thing i could find to sort out that F***ing error code 80048820 and extended error code 80048439 and nothing worked including changing the MTU to 1400 which was suggested for netgear routers.
Anyway long story short i had tried everything including everything at the top of this page to no avail. However I finally got it to work 2day by changng the MTU to 1492.

i had the same error… but also i could acces the internet, but not myspace or any of the msn websites… any one know why this is? change the mtu setting and everything seems to be fine now! cheers!

Okay, i’ve read all of the posts, and i’ve tried all the .dll, clock SSl settings etc, so i need to resort to changing ym PPOA settings or MTU ? I have no idea how to access these settings. I’m using a wireless, belkin (54g)connection and can’t get onto MSN or Myspace - Can someone email me please or add me on yahoo and talk me through it ?

Hey, just wana share with you all about my 80048820 error.
After reading lotsa post from others,i guessed that it was my router that had the problem.
Im currently using a Belkin Wireless G MIMO Modem Router and yeah, it was the MTU.
I changed my default MTU from 1432 to 1400, but i still couldnt go online on MSN Live Messenger. After a few tries i decided to change from 1400 to 1492 and it worked perfectly.
For those who do not know where to find their MTU on belkin:
Internet WAN > Connection Type > PPPoe > MTU > 1492
