Just a couple of days ago I got an update prompt while using 7.5.0311 and thought build 322 was being deployed. Sure enough, a post on the Messenger Support Space has appeared about it and claims to have fixed the dreaded 80048820 error which made an appearance with MSN Messenger 7.5
If you haven’t been prompted to update (which is likely if you can’t sign in…), go grab it from the MSN Messenger Web site and see if that darn error has disappeared.
Well, actually I had the 80048820 Error now (April) and it wouldn’t fix it with any update available (uninstalled and reinstalled Messenger from Microsoft page, so it should be up to date I think). Actually all you can do is set your clock right. Well did take me 4 hours to realize it. I tried to synchronize my watch. but windows wouldn’t even do that. perhaps i should have booted to linux and reset system time from there
ERRR!!! This problem is horrible! I have had it since like march! I havent been able to get on since then! How do i fix it? Nohting wil work i fixed my clock too! PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!!!
Manuel is right. Error 80048820 will not be fix by any reinstallation or updates. We just need to set out time /clock settings to update. I was offline for 3 days and upon trying, presto! Im back!

the clock fix seems to do the trick, making sure the date time and year is correct seemed to work fo my msn, i ow you guys my life and sanity =D
if fixing the clock time does’t work look for new instaled devices (soundcard, modem, router, webcam… any devices) and look if they are fully instaled meaning they apear in “device manager” if they don’t shut down the computer, and remove the device… it worked on 5 computers i looked up does with msn messenger 7.5 and windows live messenger
im getting this problem, ive tried correcting the time ive tried all the ie security things like ssl 2.0 and 3.0….along with the 80048820 im also gettin the extended 8004840f….and the error says its my keyports, also i can no longet sign into anything that is msn related…please help me!!! i will die if i cant get this fixed

2006 watch. The problem is when in messager 7.5 I hit actions
then hit send message to my watch message box appears type
message hit send. waiting and no message comes to watch.

Yes, I have the same problem…error 80048820, extended code 8004840f. It is becoming serious! I have tried the date and time thing. It is all correct and my computer is in 24hour clock so it isn’t the am/pm problem. I can’t get into my email account…the page just says “this page cannot be displayed.”
Someone please post something other than check the time and date because it really hasn’t helped me as of yet.

I faced the same problem as everybody for nearly a month. But i just solved the error half an hour ago. There were more than 1 firewall in my system and that caused some error in synchronising time. I thus delete my Norton Anti Virus, leaving just Windows Firewall. Upon deletion, my connection to MSN was resumed. =) I hope my method can work for those who shared the same plight as me. Godspeed!

-and uncheck SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0
- Click apply
-then try login again to msn messenger.
After you log in, you can go back to your internet explorer setting and enable SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 and everything carries on working fine.

My msn messenger worked fine last night.I try to log in today,and I get the “key ports” error.I’ve tried everything that y’all have.and NOTHING! I think it maybe MSN updating differen’t sections at a time.Who knows.If its not msn having problems its yahoo..

The answer to this error is due to the proxys as the secound error gives, a quick and easy way to fix this is to open your msn client window (obviously don’t need to sign in) then in the top right corner you will see a box with an arrow in it, click it to bring down the menu, on the tools menu select options, under the connection select advanced settings, under SOCKS, delete the entrys, click ok, then click ok again, if you don’t see an option to delete the SOCKS (like I didn’t) simply click test on the socks and proxys, ignore what it says, then run the connetion trouble shooter from this menu, this should give your key ports the all clear and allow you to sign in.
wtf are keyports and why are they cumin up as ba on trouble shooter msn is so crazy these days??
key ports are basicly a walkway to and from your computer to the internet, if msn can’t find the ports or they are blocked, it cannot connect you to it, they need to be cleard or found by msn first, if the step I posted is followed it should hopefully free up these ports or refresh the proxys and allow you to connect

I had the same problem, not able to sign into messenger. One day it was fine and the next it was a no go. Tried all the time date, socks, SSL, firewall etc etc. Tried deleting the program and re-install, restart the pc….nothing seemed to work. Then I decided if it was a problem with the connection as the error code suggested, I would try turning the broadband modem off and then on again. Pooof I have messenger back again. Worth a try guys.

I just had this problem too. I was working at the university with my laptop two hours ago and it was working fine, but when I got home it wasn’t working anymore. I couldn’t log on MSN and I got that stupid error code. I tried a lot of stuff, but nothing helped until I closed MSN completely down by rightclicking on the icon in the corner by the clock. Then I opened the program again, and I logged on without any problem!

I have two internet connections on my PC. a work network and a 3g network.
When I’m at work, and try to login, none of the microsoft based products work. That is, outlook, explorer and msn. But if I enable the 3g connection, then it does.
It seems, that when you have two or more networks, the microsoft based networking tries to connect using a network that does not exist.
I haven’t got an solution to fix that, but it’s a starting piont.
Getting rid of Norton firewall and leaving just windows personal firewall worked for me on this problem that was driving me f**king crazy. Many thanks to darkpuppy

using ccleaner to clean my registry worked too.
anyway if the clock doesn’t synchornize (which mine didn’t), just adjust the time 1 min before/after. it really works.

for those who tried everything said before and couldn’t fix the problem, as i did:
if u r using internet explorer, please try the following and see if it works for u, it worked for me and fixed the msn error and now i can log in to all webmails internet explorer.
if u r using Opera as your browser, i don’t think it will work coz it didn’t for me when i was using Opera, it only worked for Internet explorer.
HERE IT GOES:
1) open internet explorer
2) type:”http://nntime.com/” in the address bar
3) in this site you just entered,find the Proxy IP and Port number of the Proxy server, according to the country u r located at and the organization that is providing the network.
(example: -country: Argentina
-organization: CABLEVISION S.A.
the proxy IP is:24.232.185.214
the port is: 2655
)
4)at the internet explorer toolbar, click:
Tools->Internet options->Connections->LAN Settings
5)check the “use proxy server for…”
6)next to “Address:”, type the proxy IP that you got from step 3).
next to “Port:”. type the Port number that you got from step 3).
7)uncheck the “Automatic detect settings”( but i don’t think it would matter to check it or not)
8)click on “OK” and go back to internet explorer
9)enter Windows Messenger and try to Log IN now.

I had the same problem, my wireless connection is community broadband so i cant reach the router. I can acess MSN fine on other wireless connections just not on the one at my house!! Any ideas? Cant access any msn sites and ping requests time out.

If you still have this problem even after checking your time/date settings, just do a system restore to a point when you were able to sign in to MSN-related pages (Hotmail, Messenger, etc). Read the post above by MSNWORKKS on June 1st 2007 for details on how to do this.
You wont lose any recently saved documents, files, etc, but the system restore should hopefully fix this error.
I am now able to sign in to check my email and other pages thanks to the system restore. Thanks again MSNWORKKS!!

It wasn’t until quite recently that I realised that my time settings were set to June, not July. Otherwise the time day and year settings were fine. What a waste of time I spent trying to do all that other stuff!
I hate to add to this already very lengthy list of mixed responses, but I -finally- figured out that having multiple firewalls enabled can prevent your computer from successfully sending your system’s time to be compared when logging on to MSN Messenger or dozens of other sites that require time validation. This problem can occur even though your firewall isn’t blocking MSN Messenger explicitly.
I disabled my Norton firewall, and voila: MSN Messenger is fully functional, as well as all the other sites I was previously unable to log in to.

my problem was that I had a tunnel proxy server activated for my IE (the one messenger uses) connection, but not for my Fx connection, so I thought I was connected, though my tunnel proxy was down for IE
removed the tunnel proxy configuration in Internet Options, and I got connected again.

This worked for me
Remove any Internet Explorer proxy server settings.
1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
2. In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
3. Click LAN Settings.
4. Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox.
5. Click OK and OK again Internet Options.

Just change the time! not change it but fix it. There are more soultions, because this had already happened to me, nut i dont remember how I had fixed it before, but, what I did this time is that I opened the time box, then I just moved everything. Like it was on september, and I put september and apply, hen the time zone. then apply and that was it!

… still I get the same old damn error code! And worst of all is that there are no clues to the solution given. There are only a few hints I’ve collected during the past 2 weeks:
* When I troubleshoot the error something seems to be wrong with the key ports (cannot be repaired).
* My MSN works perfectly at school and other places except on MY computer at home.
* I’ve tried logging in with friends accounts at home. 2 hotmail accounts, none of them worked (same error code).
* I’ve tried another friends account, he uses a xxx@msn.se mail, it worked 1 time! But now I get the same error code again also when trying to log in with his account.
* So I had a friend make me a new account with a msn.se mail… no good…. same error code.
* I’ve tried using Trillian, gAIM, Pidgin and eBuddy. None of them works either (cannot connect).
* I cannot access neither microsoft.com, msn.com or msn-errors.blogspot.com
* My yahoo mail works as usual (I’ve heard of people being unable to access their hotmails).
* No matter what login mail or password I write, the same error code appears.
Now I’m kinda all out of ideas… this is so f*cking strange! It can’t be a virus or a worm since I’ve been re-installing windows several times and the first thing I do is to install MSN Live and try to log in. It can’t be a firewall problem since I’ve tried logging in with no anti-virus program or firewall activated at all. And the problem it NOT the freakin’ clock!
What I don’t know much about is hardware, could this be a hardware-problem? Something with my cable modem? Something with my built-in network card? But then why is it only msn that does’nt work? I does’nt make any sense!
Damn this is wearing me out… anyone else who might bring me a solution? Coz I’m all out of ideas here. =(

i followed this
1. Click Start, type control timedate.cpl in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, confirm that the date and time settings on the computer are correct, and then click OK.

instead of going to date/time i went to SHOW ADDITIONAL CLOCKS
and marked all of the options it worked ;D
i had error 80048840a
First make sure that your Date, Time, PM/AM, and Year is correct then follow the following Instruction. your MSN will difinitely work.
1. In Internet Explorer, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box. To do this, follow these steps:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
c. Click the Advanced tab.
d. Under Security, clear the Check for Server certificate revocation (requires restart) check box.
e. Click OK.
f. Exit Internet Explorer.
2. Sign in to Messenger again.

guys really the problem with the eror code in msn is all about the antivirus program in your pc ot laptop> my advice for you, just do the same what i did in my laptop. Shut down the antivirus program and then open the msn….And then again you can open your antivirus again!!!That eror code will be fixed forever….

Well if u r using Windows XP.To fix this problem, just do a system restore, and when u do log on ..try ur E-MAIL.and do an upgrade …

go on to control panel and click on time and date settings…… then set the year too what it is and then click on internet time and sync the time with the internet time and that should work mayteeee!!!

Right click on the shortcut, select compatibility, set if for windows 2000. MSN 7.5 will work ok then.

4. Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox.
5. Click OK and OK again Internet Options.

Mine was off for a full months (my wife mistakenly set it back while checking the calendar)… I switched it back to today and voila!
This stupid sh** is getting on my nerves! I was using my MSN(was working perfectly), just ran a scan and restarted my pc cause it was a little slow, and when I tried to sign in once again to messenger this stupid ass error code (80048820 ext.80048439) popped up again in my life. Now please, I know its not the TIME SETTINGS, nor any PROXY SETTINGS, etc. I barely signed out for just one minute and it came up with this. Im using 2WIRE DSL with a yellow Ethernet cable.
