It’s been nearly 3 weeks since I published the article on solutions for error 80048820, since then the article has receiver over 14,000 hits, most coming from search engines. Unfortunately, there are still many users not being able to fix it and often reverting back to MSN Messenger 7.0.
Last night, ViKz was able to fix it by removing what was possibly a redundant proxy server in Internet Explorer. The original article has now been updated with the procedure to remove any proxy settings.
I’m still interested to hear from people who still can’t fix this, even after following all the steps. Leave a comment here or there and hopefully this devil can be abolished!

When I try to sign in it tells me that theres a firewall blocking it. The only f/w i can think of is the aol one but i don’t have it installed. Also it happened after I went wireless with netgear. I tried all the solutions that i understood but still nothing. Little help?
I tryed alot of the commands, running other msn versions, changing clock setting BUT nothing… What did seem to clear this matter up was UNINSTALLING Nortons security. If it does not uninstall try this link —->http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nip.nsf/docid/2001090510510636
I have msn messenger 7.5 and I get this error message all the time. I tried these steps but unfortunately they didn’t work. When I troubleshoot the problem it tells me that there is something wrong about the key ports.. Do you know what I should do ? please reply.. I haven’t been able to talk to my friends on the internet for 2 months because of this..
i had the same problem when i bought a new wirless router
what u need to do is go into internet setting on you router
where you should find mss setting change them to 1340 and change the mtu setting to 1492 that should sort out the problems
its because u router wont let u onto secure sights with with a lesser mtu or mss
please let me know if this helps
thanks
Hey Phil, thanx! I was reading your post and I tried changing my Wireless Router MTU setting’s to 1492 and my Messenger started to work properlly.
I was so stuck with this “date settings” solution not working for lots of time but your solution worked just fine.
Thanks again!!!
hey, just lastnite i got same error code your all experiencing. Its funny, got two other computers hardwired to dlink router and they work fine. I run the msn troubleshooter and everything sais is fine. Its just so weird!!! Its not spyware/virus running in background. I havn’t in last 2 months installed any additional software or hardware. I adjusted clock which happended to be incorrect for some reason :S. Norton is running on all three computers. Ill try a sys restore, booting into safe mode, and updating norton but if that dosn’t work, ill be back.
AHHHH!!! I checked time honestly people like a hundred times. Didn’t check month though. CHECK DAY MONTH YEAR AND TIME + ZONE. Applied and okay and signed on and success.
plz help me i get da same error all da time i have tried all of ur recomendations but non seem 2 work
help!!!!
I have the exact same problem, tried everything and nothing works.
I have the same problem however for me it seams really random as sometimes it will allow me to log on and other times not. I also find that if I use MSN within the first 30min of connecting to the internet then it will lock-up and have to wait until after being connected before it will reload/sort itself out then I can log-on
I’m using the Live version of MSN if that is any help.
I formated my pc .. then i encountered the same problem with that particular error code. I then noticed that my time clock was still set to 2003. Correcting the time will correct that wahtever firewall problem.. wierd but it works !!
i cannot access my msn and hotmail
Hi, MTU=1492 solved the problem. It had to be exactly the same value, neither more nor less.
This is how u solve the problem: Lower the mtu
It’s all about the mtu, I surfed around and it stood lower your mtu to 1492 and in other post it said 1400, 1200 and so on.
1492 was my max so I tried 1400, and then 1200, and then 1000 and then finally 500 and then it worked!!!
So don’t get caught up with the fixed values the soulution is LOWER your mtu if 500 is not low enough for you then keep going!
