MSN Messenger 7.0.0813 new behaviour

Microsoft has released a Quick Fix Engineering (QFE) Patch to its beta testing team to use on MSN Messenger 7.0.0777, which will update the client to build number 0813. One of the most important fixes this patch brings is the “Always Sign On As:” bug, and it is also said to make the client faster as well as deliver a smoother overall performance when signing in.

Another change I noticed is that the behaviour change explained here has been reverted. This means that build 0813 will send session requests when you open a chatwindow with someone, just like the builds prior to 0777 used to do. This change is mainly noticeably when opening a chatwindow with a bot.

Will this fix the far too common “The following message cannot be delivered” bug? Let’s hope so.

Creating a messengeruser.com Passport

According to this page, it looks like a new special Passport domain especially for use with instant messaging has been created: messengeruser.com. It’s not just for LCS, because it’s a standard Passport, it works with MSN Messenger! The domain was registered on the 2nd of March, so it’s still fairly new, you might be able to get some cool addresses first ;)

Although you have to enter another email address on sign up, sending email to the new one just bounces. They could have at least forwarded it to the other one!

This doesn’t seem to be very well known at the moment, so go spread the word (after you’ve registered some unique names of course :P )

Immi also adds:

Not only have they registered the .com but also the .biz .net .org etc

Sign up at https://register.passport.net/reg.srf?ns=messengeruser.com.

Offline Messenger v2 public beta released!

The Offline Messenger 2 for MSN Messenger public beta has been released! Enjoy the ability to send messages to your buddies while they’re offline! And the best part of it all is that the messages will be delivered once they sign in. So, what are you waiting for? Head over to Offline Messenger.com and then to the Mirrors page and start OMing your friends!

MSN Messenger 7.0.0777 new behaviour

The recently released MSN Messenger 7 build 0777 behaves differently to previous Messenger clients. Now, when you open a conversation window with one of your contacts, no session request is sent to the Switchboard, unless the client needs to retrieve the user’s Display Picture. Otherwise no connection is made. Not even typing notifications are sent to the other party.

Developers using the MSN Protocol should update their programs to behave accordingly to this change, as well as warn the users about this change, if their bots or other programs rely on this behaviour in any way.

MSN Messenger 7 and MSN Spaces now official

Just under an hour ago, a press release regarding the official releases of MSN Messenger 7 and MSN Spaces (coming out of beta) was available at PressPass and MSN Messenger 7 became available to download off the MSN Messenger Web site. It appears it was leaked early by some press who had received it as a demo. Quoting the press release:

Today, the MSN network of Internet services began rolling out the latest versions of MSN Messenger and MSN Spaces in markets around the world. New breakthroughs in video, voice and personalization features in MSN Messenger transform the service from being a quick way for people to keep in touch to being an essential life-sharing connection between friends and family. Integration between MSN Messenger, MSN Spaces and other MSN network services, including MSN Search, gives people a more flexible way to connect with others through instant messaging, Web logging (”blogging”), and sharing music lists and photos.

Over the past year MSN has seen consumers’ appetite for richer, personalized online communications services surge globally, as evidenced by the rapid growth of MSN Messenger and MSN Spaces. Since the MSN Spaces beta version was introduced in late 2004, more than 4.5 million Spaces have been created, making MSN Spaces one of the fastest-growing blogging services in the world. “People all over the world are spending more of their time communicating online and MSN is providing the services they use,” said Blake Irving, corporate vice president for the MSN Communication Services and Member Platform group at Microsoft Corp. “We continue to invest in services that create meaningful, personal and emotional connections for our customers, letting them express themselves in ways that suit them best.”
