Spam on MSN Messenger, also know as SPIM, is extremely rare and it’s a fairly simple process to ensure that you never receive messages from strangers.
To protect yourself from Spam:
- Open the main Messenger window, go to Tools > Options.
- Go to the Privacy tab and make sure “Alert me when other users add me to their contact lists” is ticked.
When someone tries to add you to their contact list, a dialog box will ask if you want to allow him or her to contact you. If this request is from a stranger or someone you don’t want to hear from, tick “Block this person from seeing when you are online and contacting you” and click OK.
To block unwanted messages:
- Open the main Messenger window, go to Tools > Options.
- Go to the Privacy tab, and make sure “Only people on my Allow List can see my status and send me messages” is ticked.
This will prevent people who are not on your contact list from sending you messages and stop block checkers seeing if you are really online.

That is all fine and good but it would appear that there may be a limit as to how many you can block.
I still get over 30 a day adding me and I cannot block any more.
Does anyone know the LIMIT on a block list?
Guys, it’s more insidous now,
I just got message SPAM from My own contacts!
(who were displayed as offline)
I replied with a question, and it kept on
sending me the same or similar link.
Not likely behaviour for my friends.
Any suggestions Daniel to stop this
new occurence?
(yes, I’ve done the privacy block thing)
And can’t find much more information around
this other than your suggested solution
which appears that these guys have worked
out a way to get around…
Hope anyone can help.
Alex
i have your same problem
likewise i have both options checked, but I still get spam messages from people who aren’t on my allow list. Blocking them doesn’t do any good because it’s just a new spam address next time.
This is getting ridiculous… Everyday I get about 6 or 7 messages from people I don’t know inviting me to some dating site or whatnot. I’ve clicked on both of the options as suggested but still I am receiving these messages. I wish there was some other kind of solution… Please let me know if there is anything else that can be done…
All of the spam messages I am receiving are from someone named “Greg - setauket– (two different numbers everytime)@live.com. It’s truly annoying!
add “All Other Users” from allow to the block list.
I wish there was a way to report these bots.
I’d prefer a way to set them on fire on live TV. Maybe pay-per-view, get some reimbursement for all the annoyance they cause.
Best way to go about this is to set your Privacy option to “Allow only users on my buddy list to contact me.”
OMG im getting about 6 or 7 of theese now ands its making me so mad… and of course you have to jump through hoops to send microshaft an email about it…
now that Yahoo! and Microsoft can message each other, does anyone on Y!IM get spam like Microsoft? wouldn’t it be better just to switch cause you could just move all your friends over from your MSN and i don’t think they’d know the difference other then accepting you as a friend again…
I’m starting to get these, its starting off slowly, only a few a day, but i will not be surprised if it continues to grow. If it does, i will try what willy suggested.
I didn’t even see that “all other users” entry in allow list…woops. Good call Chewie…
I am getting them from my own contacts too. Have done everything above but still happenning. Any ideas?
my friend started sending me spam then i got tricked into it by putting my msn email and pass and now i am giving spam to other people. how to solve this?
