Patent could give AOL an edge in messaging

An AOL subsidiary has been granted a patent on the invention of instant messaging systems, meaning that AOL could potentially sue IM competitors such as Yahoo! and Microsoft.

The patent (6,449,344), originally filed in 1997, and granted in September this year, gives AOL instant messaging subsidiary ICQ rights as the inventor of the popular IM Internet application. The patent covers anything resembling a network that lets multiple IM users see when other people are present and then communicate with them.

Mercury Messenger

Mercury Messenger is a java based chat program that connects to ICQ and .NET Messenger Service.

It's just like your normal MSN Messenger only with more functions and it shows you more useful information like when someone has removed you from his or her list. You can also be online with several MSN adresses at the same time.

Some reasons why you should use Mercury Messenger:

  • See when someone closes the chat conversation window.
  • Be online with several MSN adresses at the same time.
  • Login with your status on 'Invisible' or any other status you want.
  • You don't have to worry about those Messenger worms and viruses, they wont work on Mercury Messenger.
  • You can use the 'forbidden' words in your name.
  • See when someone deletes you from their contactlist.
  • Send screen shots to your contacts.
  • See when someone has blocked you.
  • Nick scroller and special codes in your name.
  • Use a realtime translator in your chat conversations.
  • See smilies and multiple colors in your contact list.
  • Run both ICQ and MSN in 1 program.

DotMSN

DotMSN is a class library to make use of the MSN Messenger Service. The library is built in C# and can therefore be used by all languages the .NET environment supports. DotMSN provides an easy and consistent interface through a clean Object Oriented approach. DotMSN abstracts the low-level MSN protocol so you can quickly integrate dotMSN with your application and make direct use of MSN-connectivity. DotMSN is free and can be used in both non-commercial and commercial applications.
